Metallic Paper for Scrapbooking

Paper Crafts

Scrapbooking is one of the fastest growing trends in crafting. One of the more popular types of paper to be used in this hobby craft is metallic paper. It can be used for a good number of things, from full page backgrounds to accent pieces.  Buying this type of paper is easy if you know where to look. Thiese ideas will give the tools you need to find the right metallic paper for your favorite project.

Metallic paper is made out of material that is shiny, and often feels like cellophane. Metallic papers have the sparkling surface and luminescent sheen of machined metal on both sides of the sheet. They contain beautiful, rich color with a metallic finish.  It can be found in a variety of places. The most obvious place to look would be a craft store. Craft stores are known for selling products for all kinds of hobby crafts. In recent years, scrapbooking products have become more prominent in these stores.

Of course, the best time to shop for metallic paper is during a sale. Most stores that sell craft supplies have themed sales. An example would be a sale on general paper craft supplies. Metallic paper falls into this category, so when a sale goes on for paper crafts, you are going to be able to buy the paper you want at a discount price. Sometimes, you can find it in bulk.  Additionally, you can look online for some better prices, since you can usually buy in bulk more easily. There are several sites that sell paper, which will also sell metallic paper.

In addition to scrapbooking, metallic paper is perfect for invitations, letterhead, announcements, flyers, programs, and presentations. There are basically 4 sheet sizes: 8 1/2″ x 11″,  11″ x 17″,  12″ x 12″,  and 12″ x 18″ from you to choose from, so you’ll be able to create exactly what you envision.

No matter when you choose to buy your metallic paper, make sure you are getting a good deal on it. Do comparison shopping prior to purchase of any product to save the most money.

How to Make Paper Flower Crafts – Lesson 1

Paper Crafts

You can astonish your friends and new neighbors with the delightful and relaxing hobby of making and learning how to make paper flower crafts.

My six year old niece, my brother in law, and my sister were relocated last summer to my town. They stayed with my wife and I until they found a suitable home for themselves. In the meantime my little niece began withdrawing and displayed a melancholy demeanor. We recognized that she needed to make a few friends to become comfortable and familiar with her new environment because she was feeling lonely and like a stranger in this new environment.

She took an interest in my paper flower crafts hobby and this cheered her up and made her forget about her problems to a degree. Since there were a couple of kids around her age on my street I decided to speak with their parents and invite them over to meet my niece.

Making paper flower craft projects got them all to become very friendly with each other. My niece has now settled in to her new environment thanks to the comradery that our paper flower crafts introduced.

The following is our first project…

The supplies that are needed for this project can be picked up at the local hobby or art store. First, you need some colored sheets of cardboard paper and some crepe paper (tissue paper). Next, you will need to purchase some glue and colored markers if you don’t already have them at home. Also, two pairs of scissors (one large and one small pair) which you can find at any store. The last thing is a challenging, creative imagination that is willing to think up and create ideas. There are no previous skills needed to create a paper flower craft and almost any image you think up can be created in a short period of time.

Everything from three dimensional paper flower crafts that are placed anywhere and everywhere in viewing sight to single sheet cardboard cut-outs of flowers that are used for the trimming inside the house can be made with this hobby.

The young child’s hand is one of my favorite paper flower craft patterns.

1. Trace the child’s hand on to a piece of cardboard.
2. Cut the tracing if their hand from the paper.
3. With a pencil, curl the fingers.
4. Use the palm of the hand and make a cone (fingers should point outward).
5. Attach the flower to a straw, or something like that, using some glue.
6. Cut some shapes of leaves out of the green construction paper and then glue them to spots on the straw. Repeat this process as many times as desired to create a lovely bouquet of beautiful paper craft flowers.

There are no other hobbies that I know of that are so much fun and inexpensive to do that anybody can do at any age. Paper flower crafts are very relaxing and habit-forming ways that people can use to express their artistic creativity to their friends, or just to meet new people. People will comment on certain crafts that you have created and this will give you a feeling of gratitude and accomplishment. If your looking for a relaxing hobby or just a way to meet your new neighbor, making paper flower crafts is an excellent way to do that.

Inlaid Embossing – A Technique for Paper Crafters and Rubber Stampers

Paper Crafts

Inlaid embossing is quickly gaining popularity among the rubber stamping and paper crafting community. This dry embossing technique is simple to do and the results produce a beautiful addition to any card or scrapbook. The basic idea of the technique is to adhere a die cut image to a piece of cardstock or other paper and when embossed the image appears to be embedded into the paper. Let’s explore how to do this technique.

First you need to start with a die-cutting machine like the Big Shot by Stampin’ Up! that also supports embossing folders. You also need to have an embossing folder or die with an all over pattern. The rest of this technique is created through die cuts, stamping, or a combination of both. Let’s go step by step on how to complete this technique.

Die cut an image using paper. I recommend using a thick cardstock when doing this technique. If you paper is too thin, your embossing folder can actually tear right through your paper. Thoroughly adhere your die cut to your paper. Again, cardstock is the best for this. Run the paper through your machine using an embossing folder or die with an all over pattern. The folder or die you choose needs to be an all over pattern like the square lattice embossing folder by Stampin’ Up!. If the embossing pattern is scarce or scattered, you won’t achieve the correct results. As your paper is pressed through the machine the die cut will be pressed together with it. When the paper comes out, it appears as if the die cut is embedded into the paper. This technique also looks beautiful with stamping. Simply stamp your image onto your paper, run it through your machine with an embossing folder or die and you will achieve the same look.

Experiment with a combination of shapes and stamps, as well as embossing folders, and you are sure to be pleased with the outcome.

PaperCrafting ? Adding Texture with Paper Fluff

Paper Crafts

One element to consider when doing a paper craft project is texture – some aspect of the project that adds dimension to the artwork. There are many ways to add texture to a paper craft project including simply gluing objects onto the project. Objects like twigs or leaves or buttons can be appropriate. Fabric swatches and puffy paint and salt dough are other options. But if the project is a greeting card or a scrapbook page then the crafter is also interested in the actual thickness of the added element. One way to add a 3D effect without adding too much thickness is to use your kitchen grater to create some paper fluff.

There are lots of good reasons to try making grated paper fluff. First, it’s easy to make and it’s a great way to use up scraps. Just roll up some scraps of your favorite craft paper into a “carrot” shape and use your kitchen grater. CAUTION: It will make some dust so be careful not to breathe it in. When finished your grater is easy to clean – a little water and brush and its ready to put back in the kitchen. Another advantage is that you only make as much as you need so there’s no need to find a place to store it. There are commercial products available that serve the same purpose, but why buy something that is so quick and easy to make at home.

There are so many ideal uses for your grated paper fluff. It is simple to attach to your project, just smear on some white glue and pat on the fluff. White fluff makes the perfect lamb’s wool or snow.  In fall shades it makes lovely tree foliage. Make some fluff in green for an evergreen tree and in bold colors or pastels it makes beautiful flowers. Besides the cost savings it also has the advantage that the colors you use on your project will be a perfect color match for the base paper you use on your card or scrapbook page. So grab some scraps and try this “grate” idea.

Kid’s Craft: Make Your Child’s Day

Paper Crafts

It’s always a challenge to keep kids occupied during school holidays or on cold winter days when they are unable to go outside.  Next time your child says “I’m bored”  why not give them craft supplies.  A great way to ensure you have all you need to complete the project is by buying a Craft Kit especially made with kids in mind.  Kid’s craft kits offer a wide range of imaginative and creative activities for your kids.

You may gift your child a Build-a-pen-holder kit. This kit allows your child to build a pen holder in the shape of a motorbike, plane, crab, car, or a crab. Easy and safe to use, these children’s craft kits are a great way of entertaining as well as educating your child.

If your child is one of those who love modelling why not try clay or paper  magiclay compunds.  The Clay and PaperMagiclay can be used on it’s own or you may use a rolling pin and modelling tools to create your model.

On the other hand, if your child is one of those who love drawing and painting, you may like to choose a variety of items to make up a drawing box. Craft 4 Less has everything you need for your young artist – paints, crayons, pencils, oil pastels, markers, brushes, water pots, face paints, canvas, and paper. Let their creativity and imaginations soar.

There are also foam bug kids craft kits that allow children to make foam butterfly, grasshopper, bee, and spider. Then, there are Origami kids craft kits that have everything children need to make – Artic Animals, Australian Animals, Dinosaurs and jungle animals.

In addition to these, there are paper craft kits that help children make masks, money boxes, door hangers, book marks, Kangaroos, dinosaurs, and dragons. Also, there are pom pom kits that feature everything kids need to make animals like bugs, frogs, spiders, kangaroos, and koalas out of pom pom.

For those who love making puppets, there is puppet making kits that help children make puppets out of paper, wood, or felt. Finally, the construction and collage kids craft section contains wooden craft sticks, match sticks, paper, and tissue paper to help children make crafts of different kinds.

Finding these craft items is simple and with online shopping your craft supplies order will be delivered straight to your door.  One Australian Craft company with over 2000 products is Craft for Less.  For more information on art and craft supplies for kids log onto craft4less.com.au.

Sponging in Rubber Stamping and Paper Crafting

Paper Crafts

Ever have a project where all the elements were “right” but the finished project still looked “wrong”?  Often what is “missing” from a stamped image is the background or placement of the image.  One reason that images don’t seem “right” is that they are not grounded, they seem to just “be” there.  Imagine a bowl of fruit as a still-life painting.  Is it floating in the air, or sitting on something, a table or stand?  Your stamped images are sometimes floating.  One way you can create the illusion of a table or a stand is by adding something to the “scene.”  Consider sponging portions of the project or the background to make it all come together.

Some general things to remember:

1.      Most art sponges come in a round shape.  Cut this into four quarters to get the best use of the sponge.  (Go ahead, cutting it won’t hurt – it’ll help get into smaller areas – I promise!)

2.      You need to rub one of the flat edges of your sponge over your ink (I generally use Stampin’ UP!’s Classic Ink for this purpose.)  Use a circular motion.  REMEMBER – where you put the sponge first is going to get the most ink, so make your first rubs lightly and increase pressure as you use up the ink on the sponge.  As you continue to rub in the same spot, you’ll diffuse the ink and the sponge pattern, but if you rub too long, it may also get too dark.  Play around with the piece and how far to the edge or into the project you like.

Some ways to sponge your projects.

1.      Sponging to soften the image –   In this method you want to begin lightly and sponge the edges of the card stock until you get the look you desire.

2.      Sponging as a background – Method A – Sometimes you stamp outdoor images, animals or landscapes.  To ground these, you need background.  To create a sponged daytime sky, use a light blue color of ink.  BEFORE you sponge, use a piece of scrap paper and with scissors and punches, create a rolling, asymmetrical line that is longer than your intended finish piece.  This will be your “clouds.”  Now, lay that down about an inch from the top edge of your card stock.  Sponge some ink along the edge, making the edge the darkest and getting lighter as you move upward to the edge of the card stock.  Now, MOVE your scrap paper piece down about an inch and OVER an inch or so.  Repeat the process above.  Keep moving and shifting your scrap paper as you work down to the bottom of the card stock.  Now stamp you image in a dark color over the “sky.”

3.      Sponging as a background – Method B – Follow Method A EXCEPT Stamp your image on the card stock first. Then stamp it again on a scrap piece of paper or a sticky note.  Put the scrap piece OVER the finished piece, so you do not get ink on it as you sponge the background.

4.      Sponging a sunset or sunrise background. – Follow either method above, EXCEPT randomly sponge in other colors – using a CLEAN sponge for each.  Sunsets and Sunrises have various colors in them and are as varied as the days of the year.  Colors you might want to use include yellows, oranges, reds, pinks, purples.  Remember that you are using ink.  As you sponge a pink color over your blue sky, you will get some purple mixed into the sky – just as in nature!  You might want to play around with choices on a piece of scrap paper to get the feel of this method.  Placing a punched or cut out circle in your “sky” to sponge around will leave you an area for sponging in a sun or a moon – depending on your sky and choices.

Sponging is an inexpensive way of adding color to a project and creating a finished look.  It can be the difference between just stamping an image and creating a work of art.  Give it a try.  If you’d like to learn more about rubber stamping in cards and scrapbooking, please visit my blog: www.genevachapin.com.
